On Monday, Sept. 23, the department notified school officials about several social media posts indicating a possible threat at the school, said Superintendent Dr. George Stone
On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Yorktown Police Lt . Tom Genter said the threat "was nothing" and had been spread after "someone thought they heard something."
Stone said in a letter to parents that the district cooperated with the police department’s investigation into the incident, which continued throughout the night.
"The commenting student, his parents, and numerous other social media posters were questioned by police," Stone said. "It was determined that the Lakeland High School student jokingly made a statement to another student."
The statement did not include any reference to violence or the use of a firearm. The social media posts were disseminated on social media and the incident quickly became viral. Many subsequent posts involved speculation and non-factual information, which further complicated the incident, the superintendent added.
"Through their investigation, the Yorktown Police Department has verified there is no credible threat to our school district," Stone said.
Police have increased their presence at school buildings, which is common in the wake of incidents of this nature.
"Again, there is no credible threat to any of our school buildings," Stone said.
